A/I/DATA is the largest Maryland based Subsurface Utility Engineering firm currently providing SUE services in Maryland, DC, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and wherever our clients need to know what’s underground on their project sites. In addition, the firm provides limited land surveying services to select clients. 

We have an opportunity for an entrepreneurial Professional Land Surveyor to lead our surveying team and to expand its capabilities and grow its capacity.  The ideal candidate will bring a commitment to excellence in the delivery of all professional work products with a high degree of client focused service.


The key responsibilities of the Director of Surveying span from technical to managerial to strategic, and include the following:

  • Staffing - Work with SUE Operations Project Managers to coordinate work within the survey team and to support the SUE operations of the firm. Play a key role in recruiting and developing survey team members, provide performance feedback and evaluate compensation adjustments and bonuses.
  • Project management – Prepare project proposals, authorization for services, budgets, reports, and invoices. Also responsible for monitoring the financial performance of the survey team.
  • Technical oversight – develop/implement standards and check the technical accuracy of work. May research, assist in, or make recommendations on the purchasing of equipment and/or software needed by the department.
  • Client management and attendance at meetings.
  • Work closely with the company owners to set goals and business objectives for the survey team (staffing, growth, performance marks, etc.)
  • Participate in business development efforts and work with the marketing team to achieve results/goals.
  • Actively participate in management meeting and leadership development meetings and leadership development programs, as requested.

Job Requirements of the ideal candidate are:

• B.S. Surveying or related field
• Professional Land Surveyor license in MD at a minimum with additional professional licenses   in adjacent states preferred

• Strong organizational, technical, and communication skills
• Active participant in National, State or local professional surveying organizations

• Prior project and client management experience
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and MicroStation preferred along with knowledge of State mapping standards
• Knowledge of GIS services/ESRI

• Proficiency with RTK GPS surveys and Robotic Total Stations
• Experience with drone mapping
• Experience with laser scanning
• Experience with Trimble Field-to-Finish equipment and software

• Valid driver's license
